Theme

Major movements such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Europe-led pressure on banks to open up their payment systems continue to push the Web from being mostly for human-facing applications, to becoming the general interconnection fabric for IT-based services. Web architecture and Web technologies are faced with increased popularity (and new challenges) as entire industries embrace the mottos of API First and Digital Transformation.

While the first wave of APIs was still rooted in traditional enterprise architecture, the second wave which uses models such as microservices and serverless architecture is firmly based on some fundamental assumptions of the Web, such as polyglot implementation strategies and stateless interactions. While it is great to see that Web architecture now catches on in enterprise IT, this also means that new challenges are brought to light, some of them technical, and others organizational in nature.

Topics

Web APIs increasingly become the connective fabric of existing businesses and innovative business models. Balancing the need for connectivity and collaboration with the inherent dependency in API-oriented settings is one of the biggest challenges in this new API-oriented landscape. Only part of the problems and solutions in this space are technological in natures, as there also is a large organizational and cultural aspect to this: The question of how to change structures so that organizations can move as quickly as they can and have to in order to adapt to new challenges, and take advantage of new opportunities.

It can be hard to pin down the exact meaning of “Digital Transformation”, but at its heart it is what many organizations are experiencing and trying to master these days. And whatever exactly organizations are faced with, it is about data-driven processes and decisions, and this data is increasingly transported through a constantly reconfiguring chain and web of APIs. Understanding the best way how to design and operate for this inevitable future is the underlying theme of the workshop. Issues include provider-side topics such as design and runtime aspects of services, as well as consumer-side topics such as how to combine them and use them in a fault-tolerant way. Specific issues include, but are not limited to:

Submission Instructions

We solicit full papers of up to 6 pages, and short papers of up to 3 pages describing work-in-progress or early results. Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research that is not currently under consideration for publication in any other forum.

Workshop submissions will be evaluated based on the quality of the work, originality, match to the workshop themes, technical merit, and their potential to inspire interesting discussions. The review process is single blind, so please provide your name and affiliation.

Please use ACM Proceedings Templates when writing your papers. Your submission must be in PDF format, and has to be submitted via EasyChair at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=wsrest2017.

Accepted workshop papers will be published in the WWW companion proceedings and will be available in the ACM Digital Library. These may be regarded as prior publications by other conferences or journals.

For inclusion in the proceedings, at least one author of the accepted paper has to register for the workshop (please see conference page for details) and present the paper.

Presenters are encouraged to bring demos to the workshop, to facilitate discussion, make the workshop more interactive, and contribute to the “WWW2017 Festival of the Web”.
